Here is the first volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Clash of Kings and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from George R.R. Martin's A Clash of Kings and a preview of A Game of Thrones: The Graphic Novel.

  • Not my choice for entertaining reading

    By hlarchitect
It took me many years to learn that I don't have to finish every book I begin. This is one I will not finish. There are far too many books I still want to read. I am unwilling to commit time to slog through nearly 900 pages of tedium. Game of Thrones may be winning awards as a TV series but as a novel I find it to be disconnected and without a narrative flow. The structure created by the resulting vignettes work for movies/TV but they don't make a compelling story. As entertaining reading (the reason I purchased this book) it is grindingly dull. The best I can say is it's easy to pick up and put down. Neither does the Gaelic cultural overlay work for this reader. It seems forced and stilted at the same time. I have never liked books placed in this setting - it is a difficult task to pull off convincingly. The result here is a thin veneer of the medieval without a sense of historical reality. Middle Earth and Hogwarts both feel more authentic. Save yourself the money and the time. There are plenty of other books to choose from. If you just have to join in with the Game of Thrones phenomena then go to HBO and watch it on TV.

  • An Epic Novel

    By Hamad A.
I am an enormous Game of Thrones fan, having watched the TV series, and so I wanted to take a crack at the books. Based on the first one, I will say that it has truly one of the best novels I have ever read and provides an experience that the TV show cannot. An additive page turner and I'm already planning on purchasing the next four novels.

Scooby and Shaggy always run away side by side when fleeing in terror from a monster. If Shaggy can run at the same speed as Scooby and a Great Danes running speed is 30-40 mph, that means that Shaggy is the fastest human alive beating Usain Bolts top speed of 27 mph.
  • Excellent Historical Fantasy

Normally, I always read a book before watching the tv show or movie made from it. I didn't with this one, and I think that made my experience better. There are so many characters. I think I would have felt and little overwhelmed and lost reading it first. I'm current on the tv show, and I read the prequel book so I have a much better understanding of who people are and what's going on. It's been so long since I saw the first season of GoT that this book was also a great reminder of who the characters were in the beginning. I noticed things that didn't make it into the show and things that didn't register before. I highly enjoyed reading this and can't wait to continue the series.

I have never had a book capture my attention as much as this book has. The first book and the first season of the show are very closely related and the show doesn't stray off too far from the book. Great book

There's nothing I can write about how great this book is that others haven't raved about already. Great writing and great storytelling. What I loved most about this book (and the others in the series is that it was the book that finally got me interested in the fantasy genre. I had tried to read several books in the genre for years and none won me over like Game of Thrones. It has a bit of a historic fiction feel to it and perhaps that is why. I definitely recommend this book to those who have been interested in fantasy as well to people who are looking for a great and addictive book.

I owned the original book on iBooks and made the mistake of not owning the real book. Apparently my original book was updated to this new version which is a very poor adaptation of the story, barely above a fanfic rewrite by a 12 year old boy. I want my original book back. I will never purchase another book from Apple ever again.

It was an amazing book. Although it moved to slow for my taste. I think that is only because I have seen all of the television series and loved the series so much. If I can push myself to make it through the rest of the series, I have a feeling I will love the books and crave to finish the rest of the series. I would recommend reading the book to anyone that loves stories set back in time that also have a magical feel to them.

  • One of the best Epic Fantasies of all time!

    By Boomson21
I've been a long time fan of George R.R. Martin and his song of Ice & Fire series. Game of Thrones, the first book in the saga, sets the stage for the epic fantasy and does an amazing job at introducing us to the characters and setting of the world of Westeros. The politics, the intrigue, and the action are just getting started in this book, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lack of thrills and surprises! A Game of Thrones is a wonderful beginning to the sweeping tale of swords and sorcery that is to come in following books. Highly recommended!

  • i have become so invested in these characters

    By GOODness258
this book is great so far im half way through and ive fallen in love with everyone well almost everyone he writes. i waited so long to read it after it was recomended to me because i can easily be side tracked from a book. depending on how its written i do not know why i expected it to be drawn out and a little boring but i did. then i started it on audio and i picked up a copy and am reading it again. the way its writen in is from different points of view which i LOVE i love reading everyones elses thoughts anf feelings about the same situations well i will soon be reading all of these books and maybe some other titles by R.R.
  • Fantastic read!

So I’m not typically a fan of the fantasy genre (aside from Tolkien) since I feel like a lot of writers tend to be extremely trite and obnoxious with their prose, but I’d heard so many great things about this series, so I thought I’d finally give it a try. I couldn’t be more glad that I did; I LOVE Martin’s narrative, the characters are brilliant, the world is beautifully crafted, and for a while it almost didn’t feel like I was reading a fantasy (the fantasy elements didn't overwhelm the story at all). I actually took an extended break between reading the first and second halves of this book, but I found that despite the large cast of characters and varied story lines, I was easily able to recall what had been taking place. And yes, this book is extremely infuriating, because it isn’t a case where the “good guys” always win (if you can determine who the “good guys” are, that is). While some of the darker themes in this story may turn away more conservative readers, overall I highly recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in well-written, historically-themed, fantasy epics. I’ve managed to avoid watching the HBO series so far, but now I feel like I may need to—unless I can speed through the next four books first!
  • Too Many Characters

    By Lyn Forester
I hesitate to mark this book as being read, because I stopped at 56%. At this point, I had invested a lackluster 16 days of spotty reading. I just wasn't drawn to it. I'd rather sit and watch reruns than pick up my Kindle. Perhaps it was the fact that the book was too (in)famous. I knew going in that there would be an abundance of characters and that many of them would be killed. I had expectations of wonderfulness since the masses found wonder in this book. For me, I think that the failure came with the frequent character changes. I couldn't get enough time with any one character to really connect. Therefore, I didn't care what happened to them. I didn't even like any of them. Combined with a slow storyline, I just didn't want to invest more time when there are so many other stories out there that I really want to read. *Originally posted on goodreads
  • Amazing!!!

    By EVHWylde
This is hands down the best piece of fiction (of any genre) I have ever read. Yes it's brutal, and tragic, but so is real life. For me that's what makes the series more like a true story. In real life the good guys don't always come out on top, and bad things often happen to good people. I've read the books through A Dance With Dragons twice, and also own the audiobooks read by Roy Dotrice (read by Roy Dotrice), which I listen to on my ipod at work. The HBO series is great but compared to the books are a pale comparison. I highly recommend.
