Description

A breathtaking thriller featuring "political and amorous intrigues, cold-blooded murder, and financial crises" (San Francisco Chronicle), from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Column of Fire

In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives.

From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy. But greed, fed by the shocking truth of a boy’s death, must be stopped, or the dreams of a nation will die.

I found this Follet book slower to start than his recent novels. However, it was worth "sticking-with-it", and after about the first quarter, got to the usual "can't put down - have to know what's next". Some of the time jumps in the text leave too much to the imagination, but overall - a thoroughly good read.

With characters seemingly from the pre-Downtin Abbey era, this book is exciting and fulfilling. It fulfills many cliches: Pride comes before the fall, Avarice is the root of all evil, and the cream always comes to the top. Filled with murder, sex, and back stabbing, how could his book not be a winner!
  • Fascinating Follett background

Just a note on a wonderful book coming up on its 20 year anniversary - it is so enjoyable to see the "history" of the various Follett stories throughout. Highly recommended.

This was the first Ken Follett book I've read and it will probably be the last. I found his writing style lacks flow. The characters weren't developed well and the story moved along too slowly. About halfway through I wanted stop reading however I did pay $7.99 for the book so I figured I would just finish it.
