A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.
Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.
Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”
In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.
Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.
Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

  • Intense and Unexpected

Dark Matter is an intense unexpected thriller that will leave you thinking "what if?" about the impacts of your decisions. Blake Crouch's prose tells Jason's story in a beautiful and riveting manner. This was my first experience with any of Crouch's work, even though I already have the Wayward Pine's books on my Kindle. I just haven't gotten around to reading them yet thanks to my never ending TBR list. After Dark Matter I will be moving those up my list.

    Awesome cubed.

    By Mikkia!!!
It started off pretty tame and around a third of the way through I wasn't sure I really wanted to invest anymore time into the set up of the story. KEEP reading!! It's a pretty unique story line and I really enjoyed it. Not heavy on the science part of the story line, but enough to make it plausible.
  • Mindf*cking

Really fun, easy read. I thought the story was unique and well written - it made an outlandish plot engrossing and believable. I was very impressed the author came up with an ending that worked. Read it! :)

This is a fantastic story. If I tell you anything about it I've said too much.
  • Good read

I really liked the concept of this book. It made me think a little bit about life and how we take things for granted sometimes, and that we shouldn't live with regrets. It was easy to read and written in a way you can comprehend. The main character was developed really well, I liked him a lot. Lastly, the ending was amazing.
  • Incredible!

The thoughts all of us have had about infinity and multiple dimensions explored in fiction. Very well done. I wish I could have not read it so I could read it for the first time.
  • Couldn't put it down!

Terrifically original. Would make a great movie.
  • Twisty and Engaging Plot

    By Toni FGMAMTC
This sci-fi is majorly interesting and thought provoking. It really messed with my head, gave me a scare and is affecting me still. Jason discovers that every decision we make changes the future. There are limitless versions of us splitting after the smallest adjustment. What if you went to an alternative life where the you that you know isn't you (yes, it's as twisty as that sentence). How did each divergence make not-you incompatible with yourself? What lengths will one go to get the reality they want? Dark Matter has an awesome storyline with creepy, sweet and action bits. There are no dull moments. I recommend it.
  • So good

From beginning to end I couldn't put this book down. I'd recommend it to anyone. This was the first book I've read from this author and I will be checking out more.
  • Begin a Journey Like No Other

There are only three books I have ever read cover to cover in a single session: The DaVinci Code, The Firm, and Dark Matter. And DM stands as the best book I've ever read. While the concepts of quantum physics and multiverses run throughout the novel, the story reveals deep insights into the power - and consequences (good and bad) - of our decisions. I bought this just before stepping on a plane from London to Minneapolis (a 9-hour flight) - pondering my own future. I was being recruited to run an international operation for a client and had big decisions to make. Little did I know I would actually gain insight into my own life from this work of fiction. The writing hooks the reader from the first page, and the pace is on par with the novels I mentioned earlier. Brilliant, insightful... the story crafted in a way that demands you reflect on your own decisions you've made throughout your life - and then provides a perspective that sheds new light on where you've been, where you are, and the power of decision. The ending was powerful - one I didn't see coming. Once I finished, I sat there pondering all that I had taken in, and was literally shocked to hear the flight attendant over the intercom announce our decent. Talk about a surreal realization of a time warp! When does such a long flight ever go by so quickly? When you've got Blake Crouch as your captain. There is only one decision you have to make at this moment and at this time in your life: READ IT.

I loved this book-couldn't put it down. Mind-bending.
  • Somewhat entertaining, but with a MAJOR plot-hole

    By ipadfilmz
Dark Matter is a tale of a man who invents a machine that can open doors between an infinite array of alternate universes, all created by the individual choices of their inhabitants. It’s science fiction that goes light on the science and treads where other storytellers have gone before (as any Star Trek fan could tell you). The plot-hole? Here it is, in a synopsis of the opening storyline. Jason1 is a middling college professor with a nice life w/wife and son. It’s not the life of his dreams, but it’s enough. He is abducted, drugged and wakes up in a high tech lab, from which he escapes only to flee into a version of his home town (Chicago) that is disimilar enough from his “normal” version to make him aware that somthing is very wrong. He surmises that he has been swapped between universes by super-scientist Jason2, an ultra-rich and ultra-successful version of himself without a family. Jason1 seeks out his would be wife (whom he parted ways with 15 years prior in this alternate universe), tells her his story and they rekindle their romance on the spot. And there's the flaw… before taking the plunge on a high risk (as we discover) universe swap to recapture "the one that got away", what about Jason2 first asking out the version of her in his (the alternate) universe? He’s rich, successful, and apparently she’s available. Go for it, Jason2! Or not... The fact that he went to all the trouble to trade lives without any mention of an unsuccessful attempt and winning over the version of her from his own reality makes no sense (an oversight that could be easily corrected with a well placed paragraph or two describing an unsuccessful attempt(s) as justification for the big parallel-universe endeavor). Overall, the book starts slowly, then becomes very engaging in the middle stanza during which Jason1 staggers through various alternative versions of Chicago via the contraption invented by Jason2 (this is the most entertaining and rewarding part of the book for sci-fi fans). Ultimately, though, “Dark Matter” (which has no references to real dark matter) settles down into more of a romance-based drama in the final third (although with an interesting twist). When it was over, I found myself wanting more thriller/sci-fi and maybe a little more actual science (I like being "info-tained”). I was also put off a bit by some of the crass language used to describe sexual situations, which I felt was crude and undermined the intellectual quality of the book. These moments could have been written more tactfully without compromising the story. For all it’s alternate universe hopping, “Dark Matter” doesn’t really take us into unfamiliar story-telling territory (although it almost does in certain points). It was, nonetheless, an entertaining and moderately satisfying distraction.
  • Brilliant page turner

Add me to the list of readers who were mezmerized by this book. It's great science fiction and it's extremely well written.
  • Great read - couldn't put it down

    By nmmartz
Yes the ending isn't perfect. Yes the science is improbable at best. But the story was enthralling and the main character is incredibly relatable. I felt myself feeling his pain and sympathizing with him. Really made me appreciate my life and my loved ones. Don't take a moment for granted. Recommended read for sure.
  • Very good read

Loved how the author included physics into the story line. Made you really question what was real and what was fiction.

Great book! Finished it in 2 days. It's more of a love story wrapped as a thriller. I felt immersed in the book almost immediately and had a hard time putting it down.
  • Wow!

I read this book in about two days. That pretty much says it all!
  • Highly Recommend!!

This book is similar to the Wayward Pines Trilogy in that the less you know going in the better. Dark Matter is a thrilling science fiction book jam-packed with alternate universes, love, and paradoxes galore. If you could go back and change your life, would you? Good question! This is a difficult review to write, because anything I say might be a spoiler. I will say this…prepare to take your brain on a fast-paced and twisty ride through one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. To quote Dr. Who – it’s “wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff." Two thumbs up!!
  • Disappointing

    By NJ-Al
The first two thirds of this book had a lot of potential. Created enough sci-fi credibility that I could suspend disbelief and it built some suspense. The last third seemed to be a combination of the movies Zombieland and Multiplicity. It would have been funny if I hadn't invested time in reading it. Disappointing.
  • Smart plot

Great story, well written and fun. I would recommend this to anyone who likes science and thrillers. I hope Blake writes a sequel to this, it aches for a part 2.

Wonderful title! I consumed the first half of the book.. Great subject matter... Sadly the last half became redundant and fizzled for me... I was left empty as the corridors... Would have preferred more science in this Sci Fi

I loved reading this book. I never read anything like this before but yet it's the type of story I've been wanting to read. It's thrilling and I couldn't put the book down. At times, I was scared to finish because I didn't know what was going to happen next or how it would end. But i loved it. It's the type of story you have to read again.

One of the best reads in a long time. I tend to start books and jump into another mid way but Dark Matter I couldn't get enough of. I didn't want it to end. It had it all. Hopefully there will be a sequel. The book is 10 stars.
  • Incredible easy read for your average reader

    By K_Lo_Feeva
One word to describe the book? Amazing. The conceptualization of how deep rooted life themes intertwine with science fiction will have you drawn in. There's thrill, excitement, and education here that offer you life lessons we all can resonate with. You will read this book in a couple days as I have and you will finish it feeling thankful for what you have in life.
